The Fourth Interval lasted longer than anyone ever thought it would. Pern forgot about Thread, forgot about the sacrifices that dragonkind had made for them. But the Riders never forgot. When Thread once again fell from the skies, the Riders and their lifemates rose to the challenge, flaming the foul parasites from the sky and saving the Holds of Pern. But the dragons had dwindled, both in size and numbers.
To make matters worse, something had happened to the Threads during the Long Interval. Contact with an asteroid had caused the denizens of the Oort Cloud to mutate. They now released a type of spore that affected the reproductive processes of the female dragons. Of course, in the sterile greens, the changes were not obvious. In the Golden Queens, however, changes were soon evident. Clutches were smaller in general, the eggs seemingly more fragile than before.
Lorinath was the first golden queen to evince those changes, as her first clutch only produced 11 dragons, 3 of which died moments after Hatching. The Weyr resounded with shock. How were they supposed to sustain themselves if there were fewer at each Hatching?!
In the meantime, Lorinath and her rider have been having their own set of problems. Effectively in disgrace over Lorinath's "mistake" clutch, the pair was sent to form a new Weyr, directly after Lorinath's second flight. Named Shadow Weyr, Rica hopes desperately to start over again in this new place.
Shadow Weyr is a relatively new Weyr, founded only half a Turn ago, when Lorinath rose for the second time. Under the joint leadership of Rica and M'ray, Shadow Weyr is still getting onto its figurative feet. However, they are determined to succeed, and with Lorinath close to clutching, there is a distinct air of hope and excitement. Maybe this time will be different.
Shadow Weyr is located equidistant between High Reaches and Fort, as this is where the current Weyrleaders came from.
Lorinath's second clutch was a success! The new Shadow Weyr boasts at least 20 new Hatchlings! However, the Weyr still struggles, as tensions rise between its leaders.
Things are falling apart now. With Lorinath having not risen for over a Turn, and the Weyr's dragons at bare minimum, Shadow struggles on.
N'tal has taken the position of WeyrlingMaster, and barred the SkySeekers from further training, in an effort to conserve dragonpower.
